And as a corollary, how much less garbage did they make? Because without a fresh new plastic bags for every 3 items, they also didn't need a box for each item and individually wrapped units in each box. Those are undeniably related. And, while I agree that the whole capitalist opportunism thing is definitely out of control with recyclable bags (many of which are hardly ever used and just pile up in closets), someon also had to make reusable bags 100+ years ago.
